Provost Elementary School

For the month of April, Provost Elementary will be working on beating our April average last year which was 90%!

Please, help us in getting your students here to school.  It’s the beginning of our end-of-year testing cycle and every time a student is absent, it can be difficult to make up.

Here Are A Few Facts About Chronic Absenteeism

What Is Chronic Absenteeism:  Chronic absenteeism is when a child misses 10% or more of the school year.  This is equivalent to missing 18 days of school regardless of whether they’re excused or unexcused.

Kindergarten Absenteeism:  Children chronically absent in kindergarten show lower levels of achievement in math, reading and general knowledge during first grade.  In the 2017-2018 school year, 18% of Utah kindergarteners were chronically absent.  This past year it was 36% (https://www.ksl.com/article/50591387/7-of-utah-students-are-chronically-absent-heres-what-lawmakers-have-directed-schools-to-do)

6th Grade Absenteeism:  By 6th grade, chronic absence becomes a leading indicator that a student will drop out of high school.

Reading and Absenteeism:  Poor attendance can influence whether children read proficiently by the end of third grade or be held back.

Academics and Absenteeism:  When students improve their attendance rates, they improve their academic prospects and chances for graduating.
