   We will be learning about how prepositional phrases can expand and improve our writing. We will also begin learning the structure and organization of informational writing.

MATH

We will continue using models and other strategies to divide whole numbers, decimal numbers and fractions. We will then use this understanding to solve real world problems. We will also use rounding and estimation to check the reasonableness of our answers.

SCIENCE

We will be continuing our study of matter. Specifically we will discuss atoms & molecules, states of matter, chemical & physical changes, and mixtures & solutions

We will continue using nonfiction text structures (compare & contrast, cause & effect, sequence, description, problem & solution) to analyze texts and answer questions.

   We will be integrating 5th grade writing expectations with persuasive writing expectations to produce and edit persuasive essays.

Fluency :                            We will be focusing on using phrasing while reading to make meaning. We will practice grouping words to make our reading sound like speaking.
Literature Texts:                We will continue using graphic organizers to  analyze text elements. We will also be determining importance by distinguishing between key details and supporting details. We will also continue our compare and contrast unit focusing on A Christmas Carol.
Informational Texts:
We will continue learning about nonfiction text structures (compare & contrast, cause & effect, sequence, description, problem & solution). We will specifically discuss how we can pair reading comprehension strategies with text structures to understand nonfiction texts.

WRITING                        We will be integrating 5th grade writing expectations with persuasive writing expectations to produce 5-7 paragraph persuasive essays that use convincing reasons and evidence to support opinions.

MATH                                We will begin the week with adding and subtracting decimals. Then we will explore the relationship between decimals and fractions as preparation for using models and division to convert fractions to decimals. We will move to a review of fractions as preparation for learning about multiplying fractions and decimals.

Review: multi-digit multiplication, order of operations, and math expression/equations.

Reteach Groups will begin during Specialties this week for math.

SCIENCE

We will begin our studies about matter. We will start with the states of matter and the characteristics of each.

TECHNOLOGY

We will begin using our computers again this week. I know the students are excited. 🙂

READING
Fluency :                            We will be focusing on using emphasis while reading to stress important words, show emotion, and convey the meaning of different texts.
Literature Texts:                We will be using graphic organizers to analyze text elements. We will also be determining importance by distinguishing between key details and supporting details.
Informational Texts:
We will continue learning about nonfiction text structures (compare & contrast, cause & effect, sequence, description, problem & solution). We will specifically discuss how we can pair reading comprehension strategies with text structures to understand nonfiction texts.

WRITING                        We will be integrating 5th grade writing expectations with persuasive writing expectations to produce 5-7 paragraph persuasive essays that use convincing reasons and evidence to support opinions.

MATH                                We will complete our lessons on using strategies to solve multi-digit multiplication (array, repeated addition, area model, distributive property, partial product, and the standard algorithm). We will also focus on using problem solving steps to understand and solve word problems.

Review: whole number and decimal number place value, math properties, order of operations, and math expression/equations.

SCIENCE

We will learn about the different types of mountains and landforms, as well as how they are formed. We will finish our study of plate tectonics, volcanos and earthquakes.

TECHNOLOGY

We are taking a break from computers and technology because we have had some “goofing off” with technology instead of “learning” with technology.  So SAD!  🙂
